At least three dead in several Russian attacks on Kharkiv | News about the war between Russia and Ukraine

In Ukraine’s second largest city, a residential building was hit, among other things; at least 16 people were injured.

At least three people were killed and 16 injured when Russian missiles hit at least three targets, including a five-story apartment building in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.

Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said the missiles, suspected to be S-300s, also hit a shop in a three-story building and a textile factory in the city’s Novobazarskyi district.

According to Syniehubov, the attacks were double attacks, with a second attack occurring shortly after the first, at a time when rescue teams would normally be on duty.

The attack occurred around midnight local time (21:00 GMT).

Syniehubov said at least two children and an emergency doctor were among the injured and warned that residents could be trapped under the rubble of the building.

“The third, fourth and fifth floors are destroyed, staircases have been destroyed, facades have been destroyed,” Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov described the damage to public broadcaster Suspilne.

Kharkiv police chief Volodymyr Tymoshko told Suspilne that he expected the death toll to be even higher given the scale of the destruction and the likelihood of shrapnel injuries.

Kharkiv, which lies not far from the border with Russia’s Belgorod region, has been under renewed attack in recent weeks. Last weekend, 17 people were killed when Russia, which launched an offensive in the region earlier this month, bombed a hardware store in the city.

Kharkiv, which had a population of about 1.5 million people before the war, resisted the advance during the first weeks of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

Moscow claims that there are no deliberate attacks on civilians.

On Thursday, US authorities announced that President Joe Biden had lifted restrictions on Ukraine’s use of US-supplied weapons against targets on Russian territory. The weapons could be used against Russian troops and military sites in the areas bordering the Kharkiv region.
