IIHF – Jan Rutta suspended

The Disciplinary Committee of the 2024 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship has suspended the Czech Jan Rutta (number 44) for one (1) game for violating the Official Game Rule 45 (Elbow Strike) against the Swede Lundeström (number 37).

The incident occurred on May 25, 2024 at 34:20 in the 2nd period of the 61st match between Sweden and the Czech Republic.

The championship’s disciplinary committee ruled that the player recklessly endangered the Swedish number 37 by extending his elbow away from his body to make direct head contact with her, thus violating Official Game Rule 45 (Elbow Strike).

In addition, the panel ruled that the hit was made against a player who was not in possession of the puck and therefore could not have been hit. The player had raised his arm clearly from his body and made direct contact with the head of the Swedish number 37 with his elbow, who was unaware of the contact by the opposing player and could not protect himself from it.

For the reasons stated above, the Disciplinary Committee has decided that the player has violated Official Game Rule 45 (Elbow Strikes) and the following penalties are imposed:

  • Suspension for one game

Due to the suspension, the player will miss tomorrow’s final between the Czech Republic and Switzerland. However, the player will be allowed to celebrate with his team on the ice during the medal ceremonies.
