Golfer Grayson Murray, two-time PGA Tour winner, dies at the age of 30

Murray’s death occurred after he withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge midway through the second round on Friday, May 24.

Professional golfer Grayson Murray has died at the age of 30.

PGA Tour officials confirmed Murray’s death in an official statement posted on the organization’s website on Saturday, May 25.

“We were devastated to learn – and heartbroken to share – that PGA Tour player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in the statement. “The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a family member, you are never the same. We mourn the loss of Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”

When Murray died, the tour was in the middle of the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge, and Monahan said he had been in touch with the late golfer’s loved ones, who agreed to allow the event to go ahead. The commissioner also mentioned in his statement that grief counselors will be on-site at the various PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour venues this week.

A cause of death was not mentioned in the statement.

Per USA today, Murray was entered into the Charles Schwab Challenge this week and played the first round and part of the second round before withdrawing from the competition on Friday.

Earlier this year, the athlete won his second PGA Tour title at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Murray won three consecutive Callaway Junior World Championships from 2006 to 2008 and was once the top-ranked golfer in his age group. At age 16, he made his first cut on the Korn Ferry Tour, becoming the second-youngest player to do so.

Murray attended Wake Forest University, East Carolina University and Arizona State University. USA todayand was, according to the PGA Tour, an “outstanding golfer” in his youth.

In 2016, he received sponsorship approval for the Korn Ferry Tour event in his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina, and finished in the top 10. Shortly after this success, his professional golf career took off.

Other highlights of Murray’s career include winning the 2017 Barbasol Championship at just 23 years old – his first PGA Tour title. He reached his career-high 46th place in the Official World Golf Rankings this year, following his 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii.

Murray was open about his alcohol consumption and once attributed his victory at the Barbasol Championship to a hangover.

“The best and worst thing that ever happened to me was winning in my rookie year,” he said via USA today“I think the alcohol brought out a side of me that wasn’t me. In a way, it was the monster inside me.”

He has also struggled with unfortunate injuries throughout his career, including a scooter accident in Bermuda in 2022, and has spoken openly about suffering from anxiety and depression, which he once said made it difficult for him to get out of bed.

“I just thought I was a failure,” he said via USA today“I thought I had a lot of talent, but it was just a waste of talent.”

The website also reported that he said he went “voluntarily” sober in 2023 and hopes to approach the 2024 season with a fresh start as if it were his rookie year.

“I was young and thought I was invincible. I didn’t do the right things off the course to really give myself the best chance of success here,” he said via USA today.

“My scooter accident in Bermuda was really a low point in my life,” he continued. “You know, I’ve obviously been open about my drinking in the past. I’ve been sober for over eight months now. I have a beautiful fiancée who I love so much and who is so supportive, and my parents are so supportive.”
