Nicki Minaj arrested in Amsterdam: What you should know

Top line

Rapper Nicki Minaj was arrested by Amsterdam police upon her arrival in the Netherlands for allegedly “carrying drugs,” according to a video she apparently recorded and posted on Instagram Live on Saturday afternoon ahead of the European leg of her Pink Friday 2 World Tour.

Key data

Minaj, a 12-time Grammy nominee, posted a video on her Instagram account that appears to show a police officer in Amsterdam telling her she was being arrested for “drug possession” and ordering her to get into a police vehicle.

When speaking to the police officer, Minaj denied this claim. She said in the video that she “did not have any drugs on me” and asked for her “lawyer to be present.”

The officers seen in the video then told Minaj they would help get her to her “show” – Minaj is scheduled to perform in Manchester, England on Saturday night, a show in Birmingham on Sunday and three more performances in the UK next week.

In a second video posted on Instagram, an officer appears to tell her that police will “unload all the luggage” and “search everything.”

Minaj then tweeted, “They said they found weed,” adding, “They took my bags without my consent,” apparently admitting that there was marijuana in them but that it belonged to her security staff.

Minaj also wrote on X that she was “really upset about filming every single scene” and claimed her plane was “supposed to leave (two) hours ago,” apparently referring to her flight to England.

Surprising fact

Although Amsterdam is known as a marijuana destination, the drug remains illegal in the country, although it is decriminalized for personal use.
