Palma, Spain:

The roof of a restaurant on Spain’s popular tourist island of Mallorca collapsed on Thursday, killing four people and injuring 21 others, local rescue workers said.

“There are four dead and around 21 injured,” said a spokeswoman for the emergency services. Among the victims were “several nationalities.”

Emergency services wrote on X that seven of the victims were in a “very serious” condition and nine others had “serious” injuries and had been taken to various hospitals.

Local media reported that the two-story building is located in the Playa de Palma area, south of the Mediterranean island’s capital, Palma de Mallorca.

According to an AFP journalist, a large number of firefighters were on duty, while ambulances took the victims to hospital and the street was cordoned off by police.

Rescue workers continued to work at the scene to find more people trapped under the rubble, they wrote on X.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez sent his condolences to the families of the victims on X after what he described as a “terrible collapse”.

The central government is ready to provide “all necessary means” to help regional authorities deal with the crisis, he added.

Mallorca is one of Spain’s Balearic Islands, whose pristine waters and beaches attract more tourists than any other Spanish region after Catalonia.

According to official figures, more than 14 million tourists visited the islands last year.
