A Utah man was arrested on 20 counts of drunken driving, assault and evading arrest, police said

CLEARFIELD, Utah (ABC4) – officers with the Clearfield Police Department arrested a man on 20 separate charges Friday evening, according to arrest documents obtained by ABC4.com.

Adrian Rivas, 23, was taken into custody Friday evening after he reportedly drove under the influence, assaulted a man and damaged five cars while trying to evade police officers, according to arrest documents.

He was arrested on 20 charges including aggravated assault, criminal damage to property, use or possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving and driving under the influence. Two of the charges Rivas was arrested on are third-degree felonies.

According to an affidavit, police were initially alerted to Rivas’ driving when they received a call that he reportedly showed the caller a handgun before continuing to drive. Police were notified that Rivas was turning onto I-15.

According to the documents, Rivas got out of his car in a Baskin-Robbins parking lot, approached a truck and punched the driver “through the driver’s side window” before getting back into his car and driving away.

Rivas then made his way to an apartment complex and went inside. The affidavit said that “an officer had parked behind Adrian so he could not leave,” and when Rivas came back outside, the officer gave him commands, but he “actively resisted.”

“Adrian put his vehicle in reverse and struck the complainant’s vehicle and an officer’s vehicle, causing the vehicle to go into drive,” arrest documents state. “Adrian drove on the sidewalk next to the apartment complex and struck a handicapped sign, two other vehicles and nearly struck a pedestrian who was traveling at a high rate of speed.”

According to the documents, Rivas drove onto curbs and onto the sidewalk to avoid officers, who had their lights and sirens on. An officer struck the driver’s side of Rivas’ car, causing it to hit a pole, and he was arrested.

Police searched his vehicle and reportedly found a firearm with a bullet in the chamber, two types of drugs and a marijuana pipe.

Rivas was booked into the Davis County Jail and is being held without bail.

The allegations are merely allegations. All persons arrested are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
