A manhunt is underway for four suspects accused of shooting an undercover cop on Idaho Street in southeast Houston.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Police are searching for a group of suspects accused of shooting an undercover Houston cop overnight.

The shooting happened in southeast Houston, in the 3900 block of Idaho Street, near Scott Street.

The officer responded to the area after ShotSpotter detected gunshots. Officers found several fired shell casings, but no suspects.

“Shots fired. Shots fired. Idaho and Scott. Shots fired,” first responders heard over the radios. “Be careful. Sounded like they had a Draco.”

Shortly after midnight, police said they received a ShotSpotter alert, meaning shots were fired in the area.

When police arrived, they found several spent shell casings, but no suspects.

An undercover sergeant came to patrol the area and try to determine who fired the gun, and that’s when HPD said someone shot him.

“While conducting surveillance, a sergeant from this crime reduction unit was wearing his unmarked uniform. (vehicle) “When he observed four unknown males at that time with weapons in their hands, firearms, walking toward him,” HPD Investigator A. Montoya said.

Fortunately, the officer was not hit. However, some bullets struck his unmarked vehicle. HPD said the officer did not return fire.

Investigators said the suspects fled after the shooting.

On Tuesday morning, HPD said it arrested two people. We have since learned that they were questioned and released because there was insufficient evidence to support their involvement. HPD is still looking for four suspects.

Investigators were waiting for a search warrant to go to a business in the area to see if there was surveillance video that could help them find the suspects.
