Kevin Harvick disagrees with Martin Truex Jr. over the incident involving Ross Chastain and Kyle Larson

Martin Truex Jr. was not happy with Ross Chastain after he hit the outside wall hard coming out of Turn 3 on Lap 105 of the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday.

“Car (No.) 1 just pushed me out of the way as usual,” Truex said later over the radio.

In the replay, it didn’t look like Truex and Chastain ever made contact. On his podcast “Happy Hour,” Kevin Harvick said he saw Truex make contact with Kyle Larson instead, which triggered the accident.

“I saw Kyle Larson and Martin collide and Ross was coming down the track. They were three abreast, but the incident was actually caused by the 5 and the 19 touching mid-corner,” Harvick said. “I think Martin is counting them down. I think at that point he knows he’s giving up and they want to make it good, but moments like that make him pretty happy because he knows he only has 14 left. … Everyone was holding on to each other, but at the end I felt like Martin put himself in that position to have the contact and then he crashed.”

Martin Truex Jr. fails to finish strong in final Cup Series season

Truex, who is retiring from full-time Cup Series competition after the 2024 season, is winless through 22 races. He is currently in something of a dry spell, having only two top-10 finishes in the last 10 races. After finishing 27th at IMS, Truex dropped to 7th in the point standings.

With just four races of the regular season remaining, Truex still holds a comfortable lead in the playoff race, sitting 108 points above the playoff cutoff and currently in no danger of missing the postseason in what will be his final season.

As for the possibility of him finding Victory Lane one last time, Harvick isn’t so sure that’s possible.

“I don’t think it gets much better,” Harvick said. “I think they have the speed to win races, but everything has to go right for that to happen.”
