Murder suspect faces new charges in connection with June aggression driving incident

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – An Odessa man accused of murdering his wheelchair-bound roommate last month now faces new charges related to an alleged road rage incident that occurred just weeks before the murder. Brayden Scott Roupp, 18, is charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, in addition to murder and tampering with evidence in connection with the June 17 shooting death of James Francis Johnson.

According to a report from the Odessa police, officers were called to the area of 49 on June 3.th Street and Dixie Boulevard to investigate a shooting call after someone called 911 and said a man in a blue Dodge pickup truck fired several shots at another driver. At the scene, officers said they found several 9mm shell casings along the curb.

Investigators spoke to a man who said the driver of a blue truck nearly collided with him as he turned right onto 49.th Street; after the near-collision, witnesses said the truck driver stopped and fired several shots at the victim’s vehicle before driving away from the scene.

Initially, investigators were unable to identify Didge’s driver, who was described as a Hispanic man in his early 20s with “shaggy” hair. However, after Johnson’s murder, investigators learned that the suspect in that case, identified as Roupp, matched the description and also owned a blue Dodge truck and a firearm that matched the shell casings found at the crime scene.

Using that information, investigators said, the victim in the DUI case was able to identify Roupp as the man who shot him from a photo lineup. Jail records show Roupp had been in the Ector County Law Enforcement Center since Monday afternoon and had posted a total of $375,000 in bail.
