Fredericksburg police investigate train derailment

According to officials, at least five railroad cars derailed and crashed into six garages at Cobblestone Square.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Fredericksburg police and fire department investigate train derailment accident.

According to authorities, a freight train traveling in the 400 block of Cobblestone Drive derailed just before 9 p.m. Saturday night, causing damage to buildings in the area. Authorities say at least five train cars derailed and crashed into six garages in Cobblestone Square.

According to the fire department, no one was injured. Although there were dangerous substances on the train, there were none in the derailed carriages.

The cause of the derailment is not yet known. A preliminary investigation showed that there were buildings behind the wall that the train crashed into. The impact caused the wall to collapse into the garages. The train was not carrying any passengers at the time of the impact.

Emergency crews say they will be on scene for an extended period of time due to the extent of the accident and are asking people to avoid the area. It is unclear how long it will take them to remove the trains. CSX will take over the investigation from Fredericksburg police.
