Bob Baffert’s suspension from Churchill Downs lifted after Medina Spirit failed a drug test

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has been banned from racing horses on American racetracks since 2021. But he is now allowed to compete again after admitting responsibility for the problem with his Kentucky Derby winner.

Churchill Downs’ Bob Baffert’s suspension was lifted after he accepted responsibility for his horse’s failed drug test.

The Hall of Fame trainer has been banned from racing runners at Churchill Downs since 2021 after the issue came to light. Medina Spirit, the winner of the 2021 Kentucky Derby, was stripped of his title after testing positive for betamethasone.

“All parties agree that it is time to close this chapter and focus on the future,” said Churchill CEO Bill Carstanjen.

“Mr. Baffert is welcome to return to all CDI racetracks, including our flagship Churchill Downs racetrack, and we wish him and his contacts the best of luck in their future competitive endeavors.”

Two-time Triple Crown winner Baffert criticized the ban and unsuccessfully sued the racetrack, which extended the ban until the end of 2024.

Zedan Racing Stables, owner of Medina Spirit, fought against the penalty and tried to get the green light for stablemate Muth to participate in the Derby.

But after the lawsuit was dismissed on Friday, Baffert released a statement saying, “I take responsibility for Medina Spirit’s positive test at the 2021 Kentucky Derby.”

“I am responsible for all substances found in the horses I train and I have paid a very high price with a three-year suspension and the disqualification of Medina Spirit.
