Representative Nancy Mace closes offices as a precaution after shooting at Trump rally

Lowcountry Rep. Nancy Mace (R, SC-01) announced that her office would be closed on Monday, saying it was a “precautionary measure to ensure the safety of our staff following the shooting of Trump on Saturday.”

Mace’s district offices and Washington, D.C. office will be closed all day Monday, her office said. Her staff will work from home and citizen services will continue to be accessible from home during office hours, her team said.

Former President Donald Trump was grazed by a bullet at the podium at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday. Law enforcement is investigating the incident as an attempted assassination, making Trump the first president since Ronald Reagan to be shot. Trump’s campaign team said the former president was “doing well” following the shooting.

The shooter and a bystander in the crowd were killed by gunfire in the incident, and two other participants in the rally were shot.

The deceased victim was identified as former volunteer fire chief Corey Comperatore, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro confirmed on Sunday. He was killed by the attacker.

The other two victims were identified as David Dutch, 57, of New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and James Copenhaver, 74, of Moon Township, Pennsylvania. Both victims are hospitalized but in stable condition.

The shooter was identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. He was employed at a nursing home and was a registered Republican, according to public records.

Investigators are still trying to determine the motive that led Crooks to open fire at the rally.

The FBI believes the crooks acted alone and has not yet identified any threatening social media activity or underlying ideology.
