Former Houston Texans star Jacoby Jones dies at 40

KHOU 11 confirmed the news Sunday morning. The cause of death is currently unknown.

HOUSTON — Former Houston Texans wide receiver and kick returner Jacoby Jones has died, KHOU 11’s Zack Tawatari confirmed Sunday morning.

At this point, details of how he died have not been released, but Tawatari has learned that Jones died in his sleep.

Jones was selected in the third round of the 2007 draft by Houston out of Lane College. He went on to play five seasons with the Texans, from 2007 to 2011, before joining Baltimore as a free agent, where he was part of a Super Bowl-winning team.

In Houston, Jones reached the end zone on three punt returns and a kickoff. And as a receiver, he threw for 11 touchdowns as a Texan.

He played for Baltimore from 2012 to 2014. He was part of the Ravens’ Super Bowl-winning team against San Francisco in 2013. In that game, Jones returned a kick for a record 108 yards.

Jones finished his career in the 2015 season, split between San Diego and Pittsburgh.

Jones finished his NFL career with 203 receptions for 2,733 yards and 14 touchdowns, according to ESPN.com. He also had nine kick returns for touchdowns. Four of those were punts and five were kickoffs.

He was recently named head coach of the arena’s football team, the Beaumont Renegades.

Houston Texans legend JJ Watt posted about Jones on social media, calling him “one of the funniest teammates and people I’ve ever been around.”

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson also posted a message on social media regarding Jones’ passing.
