Neighbors mobilize as Salvation Army ramps up services in Houston and Southeast Texas

Dallas, Texas (July 12, 2024) – Six Salvation Army mobile feeding units and eleven trained staff and volunteers from Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi have been assisting those without power in Southeast Texas. In addition to the ten units in Texas, The Salvation Army’s ALM Division team is facilitating an increase in daily service capacity, with 23 feeding sites active as of Thursday.

The Salvation Army’s Disaster Emergency Services structure allows for the rapid mobilization and deployment of additional resources and personnel, even across state lines, to support growing disaster response efforts. The Salvation Army has rapidly expanded its fleet of mobile kitchens and rapid response vehicles to meet the growing need for meals.

“We are excited to be here to help the survivors of Hurricane Beryl,” said Sophia of the Salvation Army in Mobile, Alabama. “We pray that the food we serve will be nourishing and uplifting.”

“All disaster efforts begin at the local level, and as the needs grow, so does the scale of the response,” Migues said. “That’s one of the many strengths of our structure and response model. At the peak of service following Hurricane Harvey in Texas in 2017, there were 104 mobile feeding units and multiple incident management teams operating in and around Houston from Salvation Army locations across the United States and Canada. The Texas Disaster Emergency Services team has been called upon numerous times in recent years to support out-of-state disaster efforts. Our disaster slogan, ‘Hope is on the Way,’ characterizes our response; no matter where or what the disaster incident, The Salvation Army will be there.”

On Thursday, sixteen mobile feeding units and trained emergency response teams, including recent arrivals from Jackson, Biloxi, Birmingham and Baton Rouge, supported 23 service sites. Friday’s feeding operations will take place at the following locations:
