Cyclist hit and killed by Sarasota County police officer’s patrol car

SARASOTA COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A bicyclist was killed Thursday night when a Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office deputy struck him with a patrol car, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officials said the accident occurred around 11:38 p.m. at the intersection of South Tamiami Trail and Bay Street.

The sheriff’s office said the deputy was on duty when the accident occurred.

All northbound and southbound lanes on South Tamiami Trail at Bay Street are closed. The eastbound and westbound lanes on Bay Street are also closed. Drivers are asked to take an alternate route.
