Police officer shot dead in northwest Houston

Houston police said the officer was in stable condition when he was taken to an area hospital.

HOUSTON — A Houston police officer was shot and killed Monday in the city’s northwest corner.

The Houston Police Department said the incident happened around 8 p.m. along Hollister Street, just off the Northwest Freeway, north of West Tidwell Road.

According to police, the incident began when HPD received a call just before 8 p.m. that a man was assaulting an elderly couple who may have been disabled.

When the police arrived, they were stopped and pointed out where the suspect was. They were also told that he had a firearm.

When officers found the man, he opened fire on the two officers. They did not return fire, and one of the officers was shot in the thigh. The officer has not been identified, but authorities said he had been with the department for 11 years.

HPD said the officer was stable when he was taken to an area hospital and is expected to be OK.

The suspect who shot the officer has been arrested, HPD said.

The two officers involved in the incident have been placed on leave while an investigation is underway. Interim HPD Chief Larry Satterwhite said that per HPD policy, body camera video of the incident will be released within 30 days.
