Uttar Pradesh: Police officer sentenced to life imprisonment for sexually abusing a Dalit colleague | Lucknow News

A local court in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Ambedkar Nagar, recently sentenced a police officer to life imprisonment for, among other things, sexually harassing a Dalit colleague under the pretext of marrying her. The victim committed suicide in 2019.

The convicted convict, Raju Yadav, 40, was last posted in Varanasi.

On Friday, the court found police officer Raju Yadav, who was out on bail, guilty. He was then taken into custody and sent to jail. The court found him guilty under sections 306 (abetment of suicide), 376 (rape) and the SC/ST Act.

The court fixed Saturday as the date for the verdict. “Raju was brought to court from jail. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment in this case,” said Sudeep Mishra, public prosecutor in Ambedkar Nagar.

The case dates back to 2017, when the victim (then 24) and Raju Yadav were both posted at a police station in Ambedkar Nagar. During their posting, Raju Yadav and the victim reportedly developed a relationship.

On September 23, 2019, the victim’s body was found at her official residence in Ambedkar Nagar. Police found a suicide note in which she accused Raju Yadav of pushing her to take such a drastic step.

The deceased’s father also alleged that Raju Yadav sexually abused his daughter under the pretext of marrying her. However, after some time, he refused to marry her as his family was against the relationship due to their caste.
