Man killed by police in Mandeville shooting, officials say | Crime/Police

A man was shot and killed by Mandeville police Friday after he shot a woman and pointed a gun at officers responding to a welfare check, the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office said.

Officials said Mandeville police officers responded to a home in the 700 block of Heavens Drive on a welfare check Friday evening and found a woman screaming.

The sheriff’s office said the woman ran out of the house and told officers that a man inside was threatening to kill her. The man then came outside and shot the woman multiple times.

An officer who arrived on the scene shocked the man with a Taser after ordering him to drop his weapon. The man then pointed a gun at the officer, authorities say, and a second officer opened fire on him.

The man and woman were taken to the hospital after the shooting, where both died.

No police officers were injured.

“This is an example of the dangers law enforcement officers face every day when they put on their uniform,” Sheriff Randy Smith said in a statement.

Further information about the shooting was not initially available, and the names of the two victims were not known.
