A Metro officer shot and killed a man suspected of car theft, police said

A Metro Transit Police officer shot and wounded a potential car thief Friday morning after the man attempted to steal two vehicles belonging to passengers near the Rosslyn Metro station in Arlington County, Virginia, authorities said.

The incident began shortly before 11:30 a.m. when the officer on patrol near the Rosslyn station saw the man attempt to steal a car at the corner of North Nash Street and North Fort Myer Drive, just outside the station, said Ashley Savage, an Arlington police spokeswoman.

She said the officer pursued the man on foot a short distance to North Kent Street and 19th Street North, where the suspect attempted to steal a second vehicle. At that point, the officer shot the man, Savage said. Asked if the man who was shot had a gun, Savage told reporters at the scene, “We’re still working out all the details.” She said that “no one was injured other than the suspect.”

The man, whose identity has not been publicly released by authorities, was hospitalized in critical condition, Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Anzallo said. The incident is being investigated by Arlington police.

Anzallo said the officer, whose name was not released, was “a little shaken up, but he’s OK.”
