Woman shot, boyfriend killed in Tampa, took his own life in AL: HCSO

TAMPA, Fla. – A woman shot and killed her boyfriend in Tampa before driving to Alabama, where she killed herself during a traffic stop, according to a press release from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers responded to the 9200 block of Shellgrove Court in Tampa just before 7 a.m. Thursday after receiving a call from a concerned family member of the victim. They found the body of 50-year-old Kelbys Avila, who had been fatally shot, inside the home.

Investigators learned that Maira Pacheco Nuñez, 58, killed her boyfriend and then drove away from the scene, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies did not say when they believe the shooting occurred.

Officers established probable cause and obtained an arrest warrant for Pacheco Nuñez for second-degree murder with a firearm.

Within an hour of the warrant being issued, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office in Alabama spotted her vehicle. When Baldwin officers stopped her, she turned the gun on herself and took her own life.

“This is a tragic and heartbreaking situation. Our hearts go out to the family of this man whose life ended tragically,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Violence is never an option. Anyone who is experiencing or suspects domestic violence, please remember: there is help and you are not alone.”
