Dallas-area police release dashcam video showing chase and shootout involving wanted man – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Cedar Hill police released dashcam video Wednesday night of a chase that ended in a shootout and left a wanted man seriously injured.

Police Chief Ely Reyes said plainclothes detectives from the Criminal Investigation Division were searching for a man wanted on two counts of felonies Wednesday night when he was spotted in the area of the 300 block of North Joe Wilson Road around 8:10 p.m.

Reyes said officers attempted to arrest the man, but he was able to get into his vehicle and drive away.

Officers followed the man and were soon joined by marked police cars that followed the driver through Duncanville and into Dallas. There, police say, the man exited U.S. Highway 67 at Wheatland Road, opened the driver’s side door and fired at least one shot at officers.

In a dashboard camera video Reyes released Friday, an officer can be seen returning fire through his windshield. The chase ends when the man gets out of his car and appears to continue shooting at the officers.

A Cedar Hill and Duncanville officer returned fire, hitting the man at least once. Police administered first aid and the man was taken to a hospital. Police said Friday the man remains in critical but stable condition at the hospital.

No police officer was injured in the shootout.

Reyes said the man police are seeking has an extensive criminal history, including burglary, armed robbery and illegal possession of a firearm. The man is also expected to face charges of fleeing in a motor vehicle.

Because the shooting occurred in Dallas, Reyes said the shooting is being investigated by the Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit and that it is being overseen by the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office. Reyes said he also expects an additional charge of aggravated assault on an officer to be filed as part of that investigation.

The Cedar Hill and Duncanville police officers involved in the shooting have been placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
