Puppy dies after being left in outdoor cage; Florida man arrested

Lee County officials arrested a Fort Myers man accused of leaving his dog outside in a kennel for several days. Officers responded to a south Fort Myers home in the Pine Manor neighborhood on Third Avenue to investigate a case of animal cruelty. A neighbor told officers they found an unconscious Chihuahua puppy on the side of the road on Fifth Avenue. Officers and EMS assisted the puppy at the scene, but it reportedly died. Investigators learned the puppy’s owner was Thomas Byers, 65, who reportedly left the dog outside in a kennel for several days without food or water. Witnesses told investigators Byers noticed the dog was acting abnormally and left the house with it. Byers was encountered at his home on Third Avenue, where a second Chihuahua was found in a kennel outside. The second puppy was taken into custody and Byers was reportedly arrested on two counts of animal cruelty. “Leaving animals outside in the heat with 𝐧𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 “This is disgusting,” said Sheriff Carmine Marceno. “I will not tolerate this type of abuse and will make sure this man never owns an animal again.”

Officers responded to a report that they had gone to a home in south Fort Myers in the Pine Manor neighborhood on Third Avenue to investigate a case of animal cruelty.

A neighbor told officers they found an unconscious Chihuahua puppy on the side of the road on Fifth Avenue.

Officials and emergency services responded to the scene to help rescue the puppy, but it was reportedly dead.

Investigators discovered that the puppy’s owner was 65-year-old Thomas Byers, who reportedly left the dog outside in a kennel for several days without food or water.

Witnesses told investigators that Byers noticed the dog’s unusual behavior and left the house with him.

Byers was tracked down at his Third Avenue home, where a second Chihuahua was found in a kennel outside.

The second puppy was taken into custody and Byers was reportedly arrested on two counts of animal cruelty.

“Leaving animals with 𝐧𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 outside in the heat is disgusting,” said Sheriff Carmine Marceno. “I will not tolerate this type of abuse and will ensure that this man never owns an animal again.”
