Houston Mayor Encourages Residents to Prepare for Hurricane Season

HOUSTON (KIAH) — As we monitor the Gulf of Mexico for the latest storm system expected to bring rain to Southeast Texas, we’re reminded that hurricane season is here.

Now, Houston Mayor John Whitmire wants the entire community to be ready and prepared for anything. That’s why Mayor Whitmire will join leaders from several city departments to discuss this year’s hurricane season and encourage preparedness for individuals and families. Today, Monday, June 17, at 3 p.m., city leaders will outline what residents should do or are doing now to prepare. The event takes place at the Houston Emergency Center located at 5320 N. Shepherd Dr. in Houston, TX 77091.

Mayor Whitmire will be accompanied by:

  • Chief Thomas Muñoz, Acting Director, Mayor’s Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security
  • Chief Larry Satterwhite, Houston Police Department
  • Chief Samuel Peña, Houston Fire Department
  • Stephen Williams, director of the Houston Health Department
  • Angel Ponce, Director, Mayor’s Office for People with Disabilities
  • Angela Blanchard, Disaster and Recovery Advisor

The event will also include rescue and flood-fighting vehicles from the Houston Police, Houston Fire Department and Houston Public Works. The mayor hopes the community will take these preparations seriously, to ensure no one is caught off guard during a storm.
