Kansas City Chiefs’ Isaiah Buggs arrested for domestic violence and burglary

Top line

Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs was reportedly arrested in Alabama and charged with domestic violence and burglary, weeks after being accused of animal cruelty, the latest trouble for the Super Bowl-winning team that has been making troubling headlines throughout the offseason.

Key data

Buggs, who did not play in the Chiefs’ playoffs but won his first Super Bowl ring with the team in February, was arrested after police in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, responded to a 911 call from a local residence early Sunday, the NFL reported.

Tuscaloosa police told NBC News that Buggs was arrested on domestic violence or burglary charges – which apply when the victim of the crime is a parent, child, current or former partner or roommate of the alleged attacker – and released on $5,000 bail (police did not immediately respond to Forbes’ request for comment Sunday).

No further details about the arrest or the alleged incident were released.

The news comes less than three weeks after Buggs turned himself in. He was accused of animal cruelty after police found two dogs locked on a screened porch in Tuscaloosa without access to food or water (one of the dogs was later euthanized).

Neighbors said the house was rented by Buggs and the dogs had been on the porch for at least 10 days. A lawyer for Buggs has since denied the allegations.

Big number

Five. That’s how many seasons Buggs has played in the NFL. In his rookie year he played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, then for the Detroit Lions and was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024. He played college football for the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Important background

Buggs’ trouble with the law is the latest news to paint the Kansas City Chiefs organization in an unflattering light since the team won the Super Bowl last season. Kicker Harrison Butker went viral last month after giving a graduation speech at Benedictine College, a Catholic school in Kansas, in which he told women they had been told “diabolical lies” about pursuing careers and should instead focus on being mothers and wives. In the speech, Butker also complained about growing support for “degenerate cultural values and media,” specifically mentioning abortion, IVF, surrogacy and euthanasia, and calling membership in the LGBTQ+ community a “mortal sin.” In April, an arrest warrant was issued for Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice in Dallas after he allegedly drove a Lamborghini at 120 mph and caused a crash during a street race that injured at least four people. A few weeks later, Rice was accused of punching a photographer at a nightclub. In March, the son of Chiefs coach Andy Reid made headlines after the governor of Missouri commuted a prison sentence to probation. Britt Reid was sentenced to three years in prison in 2022 for drunk driving after crashing into two cars and injuring six people, including two children. One of those children suffered a serious head injury, according to USA Today. Reid was released from prison but will remain under house arrest until October of next year.
