American tourist found dead on Greek island; search for another US traveler underway

An American tourist was found dead near the Greek island of Corfu on Sunday, local media reported. It is the latest in a series of cases of tourists dying or disappearing on the Greek islands.

Another tourist found the man in the sea near the old port of Mathraki and informed the police, AFP reported, citing local media.

The American tourist was reported missing on Thursday. He was last seen alive on Tuesday in a cafe in the company of two female tourists who have since left the island, The Associated Press reported.

According to the Athens news agency AFP, he was on holiday in Mathraki with a Greek-American friend. Further details about the victim, such as his name or place of residence, were not immediately available.

Mathraki is a wooded island with an area of 3.0 square kilometers and only 100 inhabitants. It lies west of the more famous island of Corfu.

The man’s death is the third in recent days on the Greek islands.

Dr. Michael Mosley, a well-known British television presenter and author, was found dead last Sunday on the island of Symi. A coroner concluded that he died last Wednesday, shortly after embarking on a hike through difficult, rocky terrain.

Symi is located very close to the Turkish coast.

A missing Dutch tourist was found dead on the eastern island of Samos early Saturday morning, local media reported. The body of the 74-year-old Dutch tourist was discovered by a fire service drone. He was lying face down in a ravine, about 300 meters from where he was last seen on Sunday, walking with difficulty in the sweltering heat.

Authorities were still searching for three people, including an American, who had been reported missing on various Greek islands in recent days.

On the island of Amorgos, the authorities are still searching for 59-year-old Albert Calibet, who was reported missing on Tuesday, while hiking solo in extreme heat. Calibet, of Hermosa Beach, California, is a retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy.

Retired Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Albert Calibet went missing earlier this week after hiking on the Greek island of Armogos.

A U.S. State Department spokesman told CBS News on Thursday that the department was aware of reports of Calibet’s disappearance and that it would “work closely with local authorities in the search.”

“The Greek Missing Persons Alert Program has issued a report on this case,” the Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

On Friday, two French tourists were reported missing on Sikinos, a relatively remote Cycladic island in the Aegean Sea with fewer than 400 permanent residents.

The two women, aged 73 and 64, had left their respective hotels to meet.
