6 Buffalo Grove Area Students Win 2024 National Merit Scholarships

BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. — There’s some local flavor in the latest batch of 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program winners. Of the second list of four announced for the 2023-2024 school year, six students from the Buffalo Grove area are the recipients of company-sponsored awards, including:

  • Pradyumn M. Bonufrom Buffalo Grove (Adlai E. Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire), probable career field in finance, $2,500 scholarship
  • Jennifer J. Huangfrom Buffalo Grove (Adlai E. Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire), likely career field in medicine, $2,500 scholarship
  • Medha Mamidipakafrom Buffalo Grove (Adlai E. Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire), likely career field in computer science, $2,500 scholarship
  • Vageesh B. Ramaswamyfrom Buffalo Grove (Adlai E. Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire), probable career field in law, $2,500 scholarship
  • Helen R. Qianof Lincolnshire (Adlai E. Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire), probable career field in biomedical engineering, $2,500 scholarship
  • Richelle M. Shifrom Long Grove (Adlai E. Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire), likely career field in medical-surgical, $2,500 scholarship

At the conclusion of this year’s competition, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation estimates that more than 6,870 college champions will have won National Merit Scholarships worth approximately $26 million.

Applicants were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 exceptional program finalists.

According to officials, the scholarship recipients were selected by a committee comprised of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who evaluated a significant amount of information submitted by the finalists and their high schools, including : the academic file, which includes the level of difficulty of the subjects studied and grades obtained; Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) scores; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official.
