Man reportedly shoots into crowd shot by police in Augusta

AUGUSTA, Georgia — An investigation is underway after a man was shot by police Saturday morning for firing into a crowd in Richmond County, according to local NBC station WRDW.

It happened in downtown Augusta. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said officers were called to Broad Street around 1:13 a.m. after reports of shots being fired in the area and one person being injured.

Officers said they found the suspect with an assault rifle firing into a crowd. Officers then returned fire, hitting the man.

He was taken to a local hospital. Authorities have not disclosed how many people, if anyone, were injured in the incident. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
