Man is bitten by sharks during weekly swim at Del Mar Beach in San Diego

The last shark incident in the area occurred in November 2022.

A 46-year-old man was taken to a nearby hospital after being bitten by a shark on Del Mar Beach in San Diego County on Sunday, officials said.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:00 a.m. PT, 100 yards offshore from the Beach Safety Center on 17th Street on Del Mar Beach, according to a City of Del Mar report.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla with injuries including bites to his torso, left arm and hand, officials said, noting that the injuries were “serious but not believed to be life-threatening.” The man is in stable condition and is being treated for his injuries, a lifeguard told ABC News.

Jon Edelbrock, director of community services and chief lifeguard for the city of Del Mar, told ABC News that the 46-year-old man was “conscious and oriented and relayed some information to treating personnel” after the incident.

According to authorities, the victim was part of a group of about a dozen deep-sea swimmers who regularly meet in Del Mar to train.

“Our lifeguards noticed a person being assisted by others and they responded and provided immediate medical assistance,” Edelbrock said.

Following the incident, Del Mar lifeguards closed the beach to swimming and surfing. The closure will last until 9 a.m. Tuesday, officials said.

The last shark incident in the area occurred in November 2022, when a 50-year-old woman survived an attack while swimming 200 meters offshore.
