Chicago shooting: Vigil for 5-year-old girl Reign Ware, killed on Near West Side on Campbell Avenue

CHICAGO (WLS) — The shooting death of 5-year-old Reign Ware prompted community members on Friday to help ease the ongoing trauma of her parents who witnessed her killing.

Ware was shot in the back seat of a car early Sunday morning during a large gathering on the Near West Side.

“Killing children is not normal,” said Pastor Cy Fields.

Amidst music, prayers and calls to end gun violence, the cries of a mother and father could be heard mourning the loss of their daughter murdered right before their eyes.

I will miss you so much

Raven Adams, mother of the victim

“Who did this to my baby? Who did this to my baby?” said mother Raven Adams. “I didn’t know my baby was so loved and I am so, so grateful to everyone.”

The support rally took place near the intersection of Jackson Boulevard and Campbell Avenue at the scene of the shooting.

One man chanted: “Reign Ware, we care!”

Members of the Live Free organization walked through the community, offering their services to residents and helping them overcome their own trauma.

“I lost my son to gun violence. That’s why I’m doing this, because I know what it feels like,” said Mazell Sykes, site coordinator for Live Free.

They hoped to ease the family’s pain, which grows with each day that Reign is not by their side.

“I’m going to miss you so much…so, so much,” Adams said.

A 24-year-old man was also shot in Sunday’s shooting. A witness told ABC7 he saw at least four people jump out of a car before firing their weapons.

No one has been arrested yet. Chicago police are continuing to investigate.
