Pitbull shot dead by police after attacking Pomeranian and police officer – NBC10 Philadelphia

Another dog was shot and killed by a police officer in Philadelphia after it attacked another dog, officials said.

Police said officers were called to the 1600 block of South Dover Street in South Philadelphia shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday.

When officers arrived at the scene, police said they saw a man in his late 60s trying to separate a light brown pit bull and a small black Pomeranian.

At one point, the pit bull turned toward one of the officers, a sergeant with the Philadelphia Police Department, and attacked him before biting him on the left arm, officials said.

The other officer fired her weapon twice, while the injured sergeant fired his weapon once, police said. Both officers struck the pit bull.

The Pomeranian and the pit bull were both pronounced dead at the scene. Police say animal control got the pit bull under control.

The sergeant attacked by the pit bull was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for bite wounds and minor abrasions, officials said. He has since been released.

Both officers were wearing body cameras and recording the incident, police said.

The sergeant is 48 years old and has been with the Philadelphia Police Department for 16 years. The other officer involved in this incident is 46 years old and has been on the force for 20 years, officials said.

Both officers have been placed on administrative duties while the investigation continues under the oversight of the Internal Investigations and Officer-Involved Shootings Unit.
