Man arrested for raping 65-year-old mentally unstable woman

Siliguri: A 45-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a 65-year-old mentally unstable woman. The incident created a stir in Srinagar Colony in the New Jalpaiguri police station area.

The accused was identified as Akbar Ali, a resident of the area.

According to locals, the elderly woman was alone in her house on Wednesday. Taking advantage of the situation, Akbar Ali entered the house and allegedly raped her. Meanwhile, the woman’s daughter entered the house and began screaming.

Locals rushed to the scene and caught him red-handed. Later, the accused was handed over to the NJP police.

A written complaint was lodged at the police station that same evening. Police booked him under the POCSO Act and produced him before the Jalpaiguri court on Thursday.

Locals demanded severe punishment for the accused.
