Five people died in weekend violence in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A series of shootings across Louisville left five people dead and more injured during a violent Mother’s Day weekend.

The violence began late Friday when Metro Police said a woman was injured in a shooting in the 1400 block of Thornberry Avenue. Around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, a man was shot and injured on Cristland Road in Auburndale.

Two men died and two others were hospitalized after a shooting at the HotSpot on Evangeline Avenue in Southland Park around 5 a.m., according to LMPD. Police have not revealed what may have led to the shooting. The club had already been cited by Louisville Alcohol and Beverage Control for noise and smoking violations. The Louisville ABC is now placing an urgent suspension on the club’s alcohol sales.

This violence continued until Saturday afternoon.

A man was shot multiple times and found in a vehicle on Hale Avenue in Louisville, California.

Hours after those incidents, Lyndon police reported that a 31-year-old man had died in a shooting at an apartment complex on Doncaster Way. This was reported around the time LMPD confirmed that a man’s body was found near railroad tracks near the intersection of Allmond and Louisville Avenues at 6:15 p.m. Police said the victim was shot.

LMPD ended the night investigating a shooting in the 7500 block of Dunwoody Court at 11:45 p.m. The victim in this incident was shot and had no pulse. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

WHAS11 caught up with Metro Councilman Phillip Baker on Sunday to ask about the violence over the weekend.

“Yesterday was a pretty sobering reminder of the work that still lies ahead,” he said. “I just want to tell people: Make sure you’re in public safety areas, make sure you get a mentor, make sure you contact the resources (and) make sure you call these numbers. This violence must stop.”

This year alone, there have been 161 shootings in the Louisville metropolitan area, resulting in 184 victims’ deaths, according to the Gun Violence Dashboard. 57 people were killed.

Young people are most affected: More than 56% of shooting victims are between the ages of 18 and 34.

Those who sustained injuries in the shooting were taken to area hospitals.
