Norwich City are assisting police with their investigation after a Leeds United supporter was attacked with a knife shortly after the first leg of the Championship play-off semi-final at Carrow Road.

The fan apparently suffered a cut to the neck area behind the Barclay Stand after claiming he confronted a group who were taunting the travel department about two Leeds fans who were killed before a European Cup match against Galatasaray 24 years ago.

Two people were arrested following the incident. Norwich assisted police and examined CCTV and other footage to identify the perpetrators.

Although the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, the serious incident overshadowed a tense game between two of the division’s heavyweights, which was evenly contested ahead of Thursday’s return leg at Elland Road.

@DorsetHottub posted a picture on Twitter of a man bleeding from a cut on his neck.

The tweet included the caption: “We came from Carrow Road after the game to Chants of Turks with knives and Galatasaray. We asked the boys why it was said that my father had been slashed in the neck with a blade and hit by a full can.

Leeds are often faced with tragic chants relating to two fans who were infamously stabbed before the UEFA Cup semi-final against Galatasaray in Istanbul in 2000.

Daniel Farke’s side went into Sunday’s clash full of confidence, having clinched the double against the Canaries this season and narrowly missing out on automatic promotion on the final day.

But at the home of his former club, the German had to watch as his team suffered a goalless draw.

In what was ultimately a tentative encounter, the visitors appeared to have broken the stalemate after half an hour when Junior Firpo put the ball in the net.

However, the Dominican’s possible opening goal was controversial due to an offside position against Georgino Rutter.

With neither team able to take the initiative, Thursday’s second leg at Elland Road will decide their place in the play-off final at Wembley later this month.
