Candlelight vigil for man killed at block party | News

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — It’s been three weeks since a mass shooting broke out at a local park, leaving two people dead and seven others injured.

The family of 22-year-old Chalmar Fason held a candlelight vigil on Friday.

Chalmar’s father and grandmother told FOX13 how they are coping after his untimely death.

“They took my boy away from me, man,” said Kunta Taylor, Chalmar’s father. “They took my husband away from me.”

Chalmar was one of two people killed in a shooting at a block party in Orange Mound Park in April.

“I just hate that you guys did it like that when you saw a million people out there,” Taylor said. “Nobody cared about nobody, you know what I mean? Shoot those bullets. As they say, these bullets have no name.”

His father continued: “A 22-year-old just somewhere trying to have a good time. I just got stuck in the wrong place. Man, that was a good guy.”

Life-size pictures of Chalmar were shown as relatives still tried to come to terms with the circumstances of his death.

His grandmother, Charlene Taylor, recalled the moments when she received the terrible news.

“Who, Chalmar, my grandson?” she said. “I said no. I said no, that’s not true. It is not true. They said, “Grandma, it’s true.” I said no. That night I got out of bed and ran there in Orange Mound.
