FBI director to testify before Congress on Trump shooting investigation

FBI Director Christopher Wray is the next federal official to testify before Congress following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

Wray will appear before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday to discuss the FBI’s investigation into the July 13 shooting at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. One rally-goer was killed, two were seriously injured and Trump was injured when a bullet grazed his ear.

The FBI is investigating the shooting as a possible act of domestic terrorism, and many lawmakers, both Republican and Democrat, have pointed to security lapses that allowed the gunman access to a nearby rooftop. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle announced her resignation on Tuesday, a day after facing intense questioning by the committee.

During her hearing, Cheatle repeatedly refused to answer questions about the shooter’s actions or the timing of the attack, citing the ongoing FBI investigation.

The motive of shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks remains a mystery and many details surrounding the incident are subject to speculation and conspiracy. The FBI director’s hearing on Wednesday is expected to clarify some of those details.
