The British senior national team’s friendly match against Germany at the Copper Box was abandoned on Sunday due to a medical emergency.

The Subway Summer Slam game was the first game with new head coach Anna Montanana at the helm. GB was trailing 54-43 at the end of the third quarter when play was halted due to an incident involving a spectator.

In a statement from the BBF on Sunday evening it said:

During the Great Britain women’s national team’s match against Germany (21 July), a medical incident occurred involving a spectator. It was then decided to abandon the match.

The British Basketball Association would like to thank the UK and Germany for a fantastic display of the sport and the fans for their support and understanding in these circumstances. We would also like to commend the professionalism and speed of response of the teams on site, as well as the medical and security staff.

It was a new squad for GB, with Holly Winterburn named captain of a team that featured eight debutants as Teresa Da Silva, Katie Januszewska, Shauna Harrison, Faye Endean, Maya Price, Jessie Ford, Claire Paxton and Louise Rouse all made their senior debuts.

Endean, who was not selected for the U20 team last summer, suffered a serious injury shortly before the worrying incident in the crowd.

Winterburn scored 13 points for GB, while Satou Sabally led the way with 12 points ahead of their trip to the Olympic Games in Germany next week.

GB will continue their own preparations when they travel to Rwanda for the World Cup pre-qualifying tournament next month.
