Mercedes discontinued the EQC a year ago, but nobody cared

The EQC was one of Mercedes’ first attempts to sell a global electric vehicle, but it never made it to the United States. The crossover was originally scheduled to launch in 2021, over a year late. However, the trident star ultimately decided against granting the towering electric car a U.S. visa “after a comprehensive review of market developments.” Now, we’ve learned that the model has been out of production worldwide for some time.

In an email to Engine1Jan Weber, International EQ Product Communications at Mercedes, confirmed that the EQC was indeed discontinued in the second quarter of 2023. That’s right – the last electric crossover was assembled more than a year ago. In July 2022 Business Insider reported on the EQC’s planned end of life in May 2023, but the German luxury brand never made an official announcement. Now we have confirmation, albeit over a year later.

Although the EQC is no more, the name is expected to return for a completely different electric vehicle. It will be a Tesla Model 3 fighter that uses the experience of the ultra-sleek Vision EQXX concept. It should be about the size of a CLA or C-Class sedan and be based on the Mercedes modular architecture. Just as the old EQC shared its base with combustion engines, MMA will not be a dedicated electric platform either.

However, Christoph Starzynski, Mercedes-Benz vice president for electric drive development, told us in 2022 that the compromise would be on the side of combustion engines. In other words, the architecture is primarily designed for electric vehicles and some concessions are made for combustion engine vehicles. So much for the slogan “The best or nothing”, right?

Unlike today’s EQ vehicles, the EQC (Name not confirmed) is set to abandon its much-criticized bulbous shape. To get an idea of ​​its fresh design, you only have to look at the Concept CLA-Class. We expect some of the aerodynamic know-how of the Vision EQXX to flow into this production car.
