Fatal Saturday night shooting under investigation | News

Tribal and federal police are investigating a fatal shooting Saturday night as “probable self-defense.”

Officers with the Choctaw Nation Lighthorse Police and McAlester Police Department responded to a report of shots fired at a residence on South D Street in McAlester around 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

Randy Sachs, a spokesman for the Choctaw Nation, said initial information and investigations indicate a man was shot outside the McAlesters’ residence, presumably as a result of self-defense.

Sachs confirmed that a man identified as Scotty Thurman pulled out a firearm during an altercation outside the residence and was shot by another man, who was not identified by authorities.

Thurman’s age and location were not available from Sachs as of Sunday afternoon.

An audio recording obtained by News-Capital via Broadcastify shows that the caller told dispatch that shots had been fired outside the home and that one person was dead.

The audio recording also shows that the man who shot the man also called 911 and told emergency dispatch that the gun he used in the incident was stored and secured in his vehicle.

Sachs said because the victim is Native American, Lighthorse and the FBI are the lead agencies on the case and are being assisted by McAlester police.
