Live updates on global IT outages: Cybersecurity firm linked to problems at banks, supermarkets and airlines

Mark Jones is a senior partner at cybersecurity company Tesserent.

His company has been helping customers resolve the serious IT outages that occurred this afternoon.

Here’s his take on what went wrong.

“We’ve received a notification from CrowdStrike. There’s an issue with one of their products or part of their products, the Falcon Sensor. There’s limited information on what the issue actually is, but it’s definitely causing blue screens, which basically means the machines lock up and try to reboot.

“And the information we’ve received from CrowdStrike and that they’re now sharing in the support communities is that they’re just going to roll back the change. So that’s the only solution we’ve gotten at the moment. So we’re obviously working with customers on that.

“Testing is currently underway. Our testing and our data show that it works well. But depending on the environment, there may be issues with that, but for now it seems to be working.”

He hopes this means that systems will generally be back up and running within a few hours, although this will also depend on how long it takes to restart individual systems and servers after the CrowdStrike update is rolled back.
