Youngsville police are reminding golf cart owners of the city’s ordinance

YOUNSVILLE, La (KLFY) – In Youngsville, recent news of underage children driving golf carts in residential neighborhoods is prompting police, parents and golf cart owners to notify safety concerns that prohibit this type of activity.

Youngsville police are reminding golf cart owners of the dangers of allowing small children to ride and of course obtaining the appropriate permits.

Youngsville Police Chief Cody Louviere said his department has seen “an increase in the number of children driving who are unsafe overall.” In a Facebook post, Youngsville police said small children were prohibited from riding them and were only allowed to ride them in the neighborhood.

“Youngsville as a whole is unique where we have an ordinance that allows golf carts on public streets within our subdivisions, but only within those subdivisions,” Louviere said.

Louviere said Youngsville’s golf cart ordinance is in effect to ensure everyone’s safety. He said when children ride golf carts, they and other drivers are at risk of injury.

“What they don’t realize is that these children have no formal education,” Louviere said. “They don’t know how to drive and have never taken a driving course. And it’s that they’re traveling in other vehicles, vehicles that could potentially injure them, they could injure them, you know, not only totaling the vehicle, but also leading to their children.”

Louviere said even though golf carts are not cars, any person without a license driving a golf cart will be fined. He said that’s because safety is the top priority.

“Again, I think it’s a big misconception that because it’s a slow-moving vehicle, these kids can handle it because it’s not fast,” Louviere said. “And it’s just a big fallacy. You know, it’s not safe for them in any way, shape or form.”

In addition to ensuring children do not drive golf carts, owners are reminded to obtain appropriate permits and register their carts with the city.
