Family speaks after missing North Carolina woman found dead in Edmond

EDMOND, Okla. (KFOR) — A gruesome murder in Edmond is raising questions. Elyse Betz was found dead in a warehouse on July 5. Police arrested Kyle Fedus in connection with the murder. Now the family says her death feels like history repeating itself in their family.

In 1991, Betz’s aunt was also murdered in a warehouse by her then-husband, which makes the news of Betz’s death even more shocking.

“He took a lot from us and I don’t think he should ever see that outside of these four walls,” said Laura Beckman, Betz’s younger sister.

An emergency call made time stand still for the Betz family.

They said she was a successful woman with a love of horses and was greatly admired in her family.

“I wanted to be just like her when I grew up,” Betz said.

Last Friday afternoon, Edmond Police found her body at Coltrane Mini Storage.

Her sister, who lives out of state, called a detective and asked that the call be put on speaker so the family could listen in.

The detective told her something that made her believe something was definitely wrong.

“He said, ‘If you think that’s a good idea.’ And at that point I was kind of sitting there thinking, while all of this was happening, I think I know what that call was about,” Beckman said.

Betz’s older sister said she felt all kinds of emotions because there had been no communication with Betz for weeks.

“We knew she disappeared from North Carolina around June 15,” Beckman said. “I spoke with the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service and local police to try to find her, just because it wasn’t her style to disappear from the scene. Her Facebook was gone. Her phone was turned off.”

The shocking call from the police was the first clue as to where she might be, but the family is still confused.

“She was the most successful of all of us. That’s why it just doesn’t sit right with me,” Beckman said.

Edmond police arrested Kyle Fedus in connection with the murder at a nearby hotel.

Police said there was a federal warrant out for his arrest in North Carolina.

The affidavit states that the couple went to Oklahoma to hide from law enforcement and came up with a plan in case they were caught.

“He eventually confessed to a pact he made with this woman in which they would both take their lives in front of this warehouse. That’s his side of the story. We don’t know hers, of course,” said Emily Ward of Edmond police.

According to court documents, Fedus first injected Betz and then himself with a pre-made syringe containing fentanyl and meth.

“When we were all told drugs were involved, we couldn’t believe it. Elyse… that wasn’t her,” Beckman said.

Now the Betz family’s attention is focused primarily on the man who, in their opinion, took away the bright spot in their lives.

“I want him to spend the rest of his life in prison thinking about what he did to my sister,” Beckman said.

Edmond police said the relationship between Fedus and Betz is unknown, but they both stayed together at a Best Western in Edmond.

Fedus is being held in the Oklahoma County Jail on $10,000,000 bail.
