2 dead, 5 injured in multiple shootings after Independence Day celebrations

One person was killed and a second injured in a shooting in a residential neighborhood in Mattapan on Friday, according to Boston police. It was the latest shooting in a string of gun violence that spanned several Boston neighborhoods over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. In total, seven people were struck by gunfire and two people died. The latest incident occurred just before 12:30 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Gladeside Ave. and Donwood Terrace in a tree-lined residential neighborhood of Mattapan. When police arrived, they found a man and a woman in a vehicle with gunshot wounds. Police said both victims were taken to hospitals in the Greater Boston area. The man, whose name was not immediately released, was pronounced dead at the hospital. The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to police. Video from Sky5 showed crime scene markings around a home and a vehicle that appeared to have driven through a fence. Police said the preliminary investigation into the shooting indicated it was not a random attack, but they did not provide any further information. The shooting occurred just hours after three other shootings after Boston celebrated the Fourth of July. Police responded to 297 Centre St. in Jamaica Plain at 1:26 a.m., where three adults were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. At 1:33 a.m., police were called to 618 Shawmut Ave. in Roxbury. A man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Neighbor Nisha Torres said she heard 6 to 7 gunshots while she and her baby were trying to sleep. “I jumped out of bed. It didn’t sound like fireworks at all,” Torres said. “The shootings just never stop. Especially in the summer.” In Dorchester, one person suffered life-threatening injuries when a shooting occurred at a Mobil gas station on Blue Hill Avenue just before 6 a.m., according to police. No one was arrested in any of the incidents, police said, and investigations are ongoing. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu hopes to curb the rise in violence around July 4. “We actually held a number of planning meetings beforehand where we analyzed historical sites where there have been more violent incidents and deployed more resources to those sites beforehand,” she said. “We already have more follow-up meetings underway with the affected communities and some of the individual agencies.”
