“All three are residents of a neighbouring state,” an official said, adding that the Kolkata Police’s anti-hooligan squad had arrested them and they would be produced before the court on Friday.

“Police are investigating how the men got hold of the gun. They are also trying to identify the accused from CCTV footage of the street,” the official added. Another official from Kolkata Police Intelligence Department, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “We have not found any evidence of gunfire so far.”

“We know (one of the accused) as a cleaner. Sometimes he works at our house. In the last few days, he has been calling my husband and saying he has no work and asking if he can do anything for him,” said Poonam Dey.

She added: “Yesterday he came and we let him in because we thought he had come to clean our bathroom. Shortly after, two unknown men who were hiding near the stairs entered our house with him. We asked why they were here, but before we could realize it, they grabbed my husband and tried to cover his mouth with tape. I saw this and kept screaming.”

Manisha Bose, councillor of Ward 87, to which the area belongs, expressed her displeasure over the incident, calling it “shocking”.
