Atlanta native Ben Shelton advances to Wimbledon third round after thrilling 5-set win – WSB-TV Channel 2

LONDON, England — Atlanta native and world No. 14 Ben Shelton advanced to the third round of Wimbledon after a thrilling five-set victory Thursday.

Shelton, 21, beat South African Lloyd Harris in five sets, with the final set ending in an exhilarating, back-and-forth tiebreak.

Atlanta-born Shelton made a splash at the US Open last year, becoming the youngest American to reach the US Open semi-finals since 1992.

After losing in the second round at Wimbledon last year, this is Shelton’s best performance at the tournament to date.

Shelton’s father is Bryan Shelton, a former men’s tennis player and head coach of the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team. Shelton was an All-American at Georgia Tech in the 1980s and is a Yellow Jackets Hall of Famer.

After his father was hired by Florida, the Shelton family moved from Atlanta to Gainesville.

Next, Shelton will face Canada’s Denis Shapovalov.
