EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WIBC) – A man was shot and killed by police in Evansville late Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, it was this man who called 911 at around 5:15 p.m. and told police that he was taking care of a “problem” and that if police did not come to resolve the issue, he would “take care of it himself.”

Sergeant Anna Gray of the Evansville Police Department said officers were dispatched to the area and encountered the man, who then pulled out a gun.

He pointed the gun at the officers as he backed away into an alley. He then fired a few shots and the officers returned fire, fatally striking him. None of the officers were injured. Police believe he was suffering from some sort of mental health issue.

Evansville police say five officers fired their weapons after the man initially shot at them. The entire incident was captured by body camera. All five officers are currently on leave, which is standard protocol.

Investigators are expected to release the bodycam footage at a press conference sometime on Wednesday.
