81-year-old man hit and killed while leaving a McDonald’s in Lewisville

LEWISVILLE, Texas – Friends in the Fairfax City, Virginia, area are remembering longtime educator George Stepp, who was killed in a tragic car crash involving a pedestrian.

Lewisville police told WFAA that Stepp, who lives in Flower Mound, was hit in the parking lot of a McDonald’s on West Main Street on Saturday morning.

“Everything points to this being a terrible accident,” said Matt Martucci of Lewisville police. “This man did nothing wrong. He just went out for his morning coffee and out of the blue he was hit,” he said.

Stepp was struck by a red truck as it was reversing and suddenly accelerated. It is unclear what caused the driver to accelerate.

“It breaks my heart for his family that this happened,” said Dr. Phyllis Pajardo, a former colleague of Stepp’s. “He was social. He was energetic. He cared deeply about his work,” she said.

Stepp, 81, served as a teacher, principal, superintendent and district school board member in Virginia for more than four decades. He is described as a “business savvy guy through and through” whose legacy will be the Fairfax schools he built and the educators he nurtured.

“He has approached, promoted, mentored and guided many of us,” Pajardo said.

WFAA attempted to reach Stepp’s family in Flower Mound but was unable to make contact. Lewisville police said the driver was undergoing a medical evaluation and no charges have been filed against him.
