Man cut power to resident’s medical equipment to get him to vacate apartment: Police – NBC Connecticut

State police have arrested a New Fairfield man who they say turned off the power to a residence and turned off a resident’s medical equipment in an attempt to get the person to leave.

New Fairfield police officers and state police troopers responded to a report of a disturbance at an unknown address Tuesday.

The caller told them that a resident of the apartment relied on medical equipment that runs on electricity, and that a 73-year-old New Fairfield man, who had expressed the resident’s desire to vacate the apartment, had shut off the apartment’s main power, according to state police.

Officers who responded to the call checked the resident and called emergency services as a precaution to examine the person, state police said.

The suspect admitted that he interfered with the functioning of the medical equipment by turning off the power to the apartment, according to a state police press release.

When asked whether he was aware that the medical equipment was vital to the well-being of the apartment resident, he replied that he was aware of the possible consequences of his actions, the press release continues.

Police concluded that this was a family violence crime and charged the man with disturbing the peace, first-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree assault on an elderly person, and willful cruelty to persons.

He was held on $20,000 bail.
