The shooting occurred shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday in the driveway of a home on Roosevelt Avenue.

“They were lying on the driveway. They were laying there like they had injuries to their abdomen and back,” said Josh Lenoff, a local business owner.

Both victims were flown to trauma centers by rescue helicopters.

Jasvir Kaur, 29, of Carteret, succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The other victim, a 20-year-old woman from Carteret, remains in critical condition at University Hospital in Newark.

The shooting sparked a manhunt for the suspect, who was eventually found in a backyard of a home on Post Boulevard, just minutes from the crime scene.

Neighbor Ana Santiago’s Ring video captured the tense moment when heavily armed police confronted the suspect. Officers ordered the man to throw himself on the ground.

It all happened in Orlando Suarez’s backyard.

“I just saw him run into the backyard,” Suarez said. “He just runs right into the backyard.”

Suarez witnessed police making the decisive arrest after an hours-long manhunt, but earlier that day his father, Elias, had gotten into a fight in the driveway with Gill, who unbeknownst to him was wanted in connection with a double shooting.

“I knew there was something wrong with him. He just didn’t seem – he was agitated. He just asked for a glass of water. He looked like he was running through the woods,” said Elias Suarez. “It must have happened about five or 10 minutes after he shot somebody. Honestly.”

He immediately reported the first encounter to the police, who had already surrounded Carteret with dogs and armored vehicles.

“A few hours later he comes back, runs through our backyard and is chased by the police. Then he tries to jump over our fence to escape, but he ends up getting caught,” said Orlando Suarez.

Gill is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correctional Center pending the outcome of his detention hearing.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Keith Cassens of the Carteret Police Department at 732-541-3852 or Detective Javier Morillo of the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office at 732-745-8843.
