After investigation into Canadian GP, severe punishment for Perez announced

Sergio Perez has been demoted three places on the grid for the Spanish Grand Prix after being found guilty of driving his car in unsafe conditions.

On the 53rd lap of the race, Perez spun into the wall at Turn 6, suffering significant damage to his rear wing.

The Red Bull driver returned to the pit lane under his own power to abandon the race.

However, he left debris on the track, whereupon the race management launched an investigation into unsafe driving of his car.

In addition to being demoted three places on the grid for the race in Barcelona, Red Bull was fined 25,000 euros.

Statement by the Sports Commissioners

“After contact with the barrier at Turn 6, the driver continued on the track for the remainder of the lap with a significantly damaged car, losing several carbon fiber parts on the way back to the pits,” said a statement from race control.

“The team confirmed at the hearing that the driver had been advised to bring the car back to the pits as they wanted to avoid a safety car situation.

“The race management concludes that, due to the safety risks of the incident, a sporting penalty is necessary in addition to a financial penalty for the team.

“The punishment will be imposed in accordance with precedent.”
