One dead and several injured in violence at Lake Berryessa

A man was fatally shot and several others stabbed when a fight broke out at a picnic area on the shores of Lake Berryessa in Northern California on Saturday, authorities said.

At around 5:30 p.m., violence broke out in the Oak Shores day-use area, said Henry Wofford, spokesman for the Napa County Sheriff’s Office.

“There is no information on what actually sparked this altercation,” Wofford said. “This fight escalated; it got very big.”

When deputies arrived, they found a man with a fatal gunshot wound.

Two of the stabbed people were flown to the hospital by helicopter, Wofford said. Other victims were taken to the hospital by ambulance or driven by others, he said.

The recreation area near Napa Valley is a popular spot where people wade and swim in the lake. It became a chaotic crime scene, and officials interviewed witnesses into the night.

“We still have several investigators at the lake talking to victims and witnesses,” Wofford said Saturday night. “We have a lot of people we need to talk to. There are also several officers and detectives at local hospitals gathering information right now.”

He said he initially had no information about the condition of the injured.

Investigators were trying to determine how the violence started and how many people were involved, Wofford said.

No arrests were made.

“We’re asking ourselves: Who did what, who is the victim and who is the suspect? We’re gathering information to find out,” Wofford said.

The investigation is being led by Napa County Sheriff’s Detectives. Due to the magnitude of the incident, Wofford said, Task force for serious crime supports the investigation.
